A rare coalition of bank executives and state construction ministers has raised its voice against the expropriation of large housing companies ahead of the Berlin House of Representatives election in the fall. The state construction ministers are calling on the federal government to pass a law protecting investments to prevent expropriation. Banks warn of economic consequences and advocate for alternatives.
The reason for the nervousness: commercial large landlords such as Vonovia could soon have a total of 220,000 apartments taken away by law and transferred to public ownership.
