On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the Russian army unleashed a massive attack on Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that at least six people were killed and many more injured in the strikes. The attacks affected around 20 regions, including the capital Kyiv, the western city of Lviv, and the port city of Odessa.

Zelensky stated on Telegram that Ukrainian soldiers are defending the country, but the apparent goal of Russia is to overload the air defense systems. Ukrainian authorities warned of a potentially prolonged bombardment targeting energy facilities, arms factories, and government buildings in major cities.

In the western region of Rivne, three people were killed and four others injured. One person also died in the Zaporizhzhia region, while two others were killed in the Kherson region. Injuries were reported in the Black Sea region of Odessa as well as in the central regions of Cherkasy and Khmelnytskyi.

The attacks occurred during the day and seemingly targeted critical infrastructure in the western part of the country. In response to the situation, the Polish army was prompted to scramble fighter jets, although NATO member airspace was not violated.
