Deniz Undav is the celebrated super joker of the German national team at the World Cup. The striker has five goal involvements in just two World Cup matches so far – and that in only 56 minutes of playing time. The international press has already hailed the 28-year-old as a ‘Super Sub’.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann was impressed by Undav’s performances. ‘That’s great for him right now,’ Nagelsmann said. However, he did not guarantee a starting spot for the final group match against Ecuador: a start from the beginning was ‘not ruled out’. Undav himself emphasized that the team has ‘a common goal’.
Joker goals are trending at the World Cup. Other teams are also benefiting from substitutions: Johan Manzambi (Switzerland), Marcus Rashford (England), and Helio Valera (Cape Verde) decided matches after coming on. The record of 32 joker goals from 2014 could be surpassed in 104 World Cup matches.
