Didier Deschamps learned of his mother’s death on Thursday morning, the French Football Federation announced. The national coach returned to France to attend the funeral. His assistant Guy Stéphan will take charge of the team.
The decision was made in consultation with federation president Philippe Diallo.
France have already secured their place in the knockout stage. Friday’s match against Norway in Boston (9 p.m.) will decide who tops the group. Thanks to a superior goal difference, a draw is enough for Bleus.
