During their meeting in Beijing, Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, and Xi Jinping, the President of China, exchanged demonstrative friendly gestures. Trump referred to Xi as a “great leader” and praised the cooperation between the two nations. This meeting took place against the backdrop of strained relations marked by conflicts such as the trade dispute and geopolitical tensions.
Xi Jinping warned during the discussions of a further escalation in the Taiwan dispute and emphasized the potential consequences for bilateral relations. Economic cooperation, including the expansion of trade relations and Chinese investments in the US, was also a central topic of the negotiations.
Matthias Naß, International Correspondent for Zeit, assesses the impact of these talks on US-China relations. He highlights that geopolitical tensions and the war in Iran further complicate the negotiations.
The political debates surrounding the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, particularly Israel’s participation, were also addressed. Several artist initiatives and broadcasting organizations are protesting against the performance of Israeli candidate Noam Bettan, intensifying discussions about the competition.
