The Berlin Administrative Court granted an urgent motion by a man from Eritrea who had challenged his rejection at the German-Polish border. The Federal Police must now allow him to cross the border, as otherwise he would face “serious and unreasonable” disadvantages, according to the decision. Already last year, a court had declared the rejection of asylum seekers during border checks on German territory unlawful for the first time.
Dröge said the renewed court decision was “another defeat for Alexander Dobrindt’s policy.” That the CSU politician simply persists with the rejections is, in her view, “an outrageous disregard for the judiciary.” She called dismissing the court rulings as mere “individual decisions” a transparent diversionary tactic.
Dobrindt intensified the controls, which his predecessor Nancy Faeser (SPD) had extended to all German land borders in May 2025. He also instructed the Federal Police to turn back asylum seekers – with the exception of the sick, pregnant women, and other vulnerable people. Dröge demanded consequences for this policy and warned that the border controls endangered cohesion within the European Union.
