Investigators accuse the group of systematically bringing methadone into the detention facility. More than 560 drug-laced tablets entered the prison, police said. The gang sold between 300 and 800 methadone tablets monthly in Kyiv and the region, with a black-market price of 400 to 600 hryvnias (about 9 to 14 euros) per tablet.
According to police, the perpetrators used patients on substitution therapy who legally obtained methadone at several medical facilities. Instead of going to the prescribed clinic, they received the drug at different hospitals to hoard larger quantities. The drugs were then smuggled into the detention center by mail or personal delivery, hidden in household soap or a red beet.
Police searched 15 apartments and workplaces of the suspects, seizing methadone, diphenhydramine, sonnat, mobile phones, bank cards, and medical documents. Seven people have been officially named as suspects, three of whom are in pre-trial detention. The prosecutor’s office accuses the group of organized drug trafficking.
