The European Union (EU) has agreed on a reform of air passenger rights. According to Die Zeit, the agreement stipulates that families with minor children will be able to reserve adjacent seats at no additional cost. Airlines must also display ticket prices more transparently, including the price for carry-on luggage.

The agreement was signed by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Cyprus Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades. It still needs to be confirmed by the Council of Member States and the European Parliament, which is considered a formality. Metsola stated that the new rules strengthen passenger rights and create more transparency for consumers and airlines. Vafeades emphasized that the modernized framework brings legal certainty and fairness for millions of European air travelers.

The reform also provides that passengers continue to be entitled to compensation for flight delays of at least three hours, tiered by distance: 250 euros for flights up to 1,500 kilometers, 400 euros for up to 3,500 kilometers, and 600 euros for longer distances. Additionally, passengers who have checked in digitally will have the right to a free printed ticket.
