Friedrich Merz (CDU) has identified growth and employment as the government's top priorities. According to Spiegel, he wants to see swift progress in implementing reforms.

Ahead of the cabinet retreat on Tuesday and Wednesday at Neuhardenberg Castle in Brandenburg, Merz told Bild am Sonntag: “So full concentration on that, keeping our eyes on the ball.” The reforms passed before the summer break were “historic decisions” that now needed to be implemented quickly.

The black-red coalition had pushed through, among other things, the savings law for statutory health insurance funds and the building modernization act through both the Bundestag and the Bundesrat. In addition, the recommendations of the pension commission are to be fully implemented, and from 2027 tax relief for small and middle incomes is to take effect.

Merz promised to rally the team to the task during the retreat. Responding to criticism from the opposition and from within his own ranks, he stressed: “The federal government will not be diverted from its course; we know what is right and good for the country.”
