Russian forces fired rockets at Boryspil, a suburb east of Kyiv, shortly after German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in the Ukrainian capital by special train on Saturday morning.

The attack came just after the CDU politician arrived in the Ukrainian capital. Ukraine’s air force reported at least three rockets fired at Boryspil, about 30 kilometers east of Kyiv. Videos posted on X and Telegram purportedly show a large plume of smoke; a gas station and a truck were said to have caught fire. These claims could not be independently verified at first.

Wadephul arrived a few days before the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence to reaffirm Germany’s continued solidarity in the fight against Russian aggression. “We stand by Ukraine. We support it. It will win this military confrontation,” he said after arriving. He accused Moscow of “indiscriminate killing of civilians” and the deliberate destruction of energy infrastructure. July and August, he said, had been the deadliest months for Ukrainian civilians in more than four years.

The foreign minister also promised further aid ahead of winter, when increased attacks on energy supplies are expected. Germany invests more than any other country in military and financial support. Wadephul expressed hope that military pressure could bring Russia to the negotiating table. The visit had not been announced for security reasons; his schedule in Kyiv remains secret.
