The EU will begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on Monday. The Cypriot Council presidency announced that member states have agreed on a common position for the first negotiation cluster after Hungary ended its blockade.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked EU partners on social media and stressed that Ukraine will do everything necessary. He called the opening of the first cluster important political and moral support for his country.

Moldovan Maia Sandu also welcomed the decision and said Moldova is ready to open all negotiation clusters. EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova originally started in June 2024 but were blocked by a Hungarian veto.

The first negotiation cluster requires the countries to demonstrate that their judicial system and public administration meet EU standards. The entire process is divided into six thematic clusters with a total of 33 chapters.
