EU ambassadors agreed on July 8 to request negotiating positions from Ukraine and Moldova for Chapter 6 “External Relations.” The EU’s common negotiating position is expected to be approved later this week, the Kyiv Post reported, citing diplomatic sources.
The formal opening of the chapter is planned for July 14 during intergovernmental conferences on the sidelines of the EU General Affairs Council in Brussels. Chapter 6 would be the second chapter for Ukraine, following the “Fundamentals” chapter opened in June.
The step became possible after Hungary dropped its blockade on July 3. Budapest had previously blocked approval of the screening results for Chapters 2 through 6. Ukraine and Moldova formally started accession negotiations in June 2024.
