EU countries seek €43 billion compensation for weapons delivered to Ukraine

EU member states have submitted claims to the European Commission requesting a total of €43 billion in compensation for weapons supplied to Ukraine, a sum that exceeds what the currently available European Peace Facility (EPF) funds could cover, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

The claims envisage that part of the payments would be made through the European Peace Facility (EPF), Ukrainska Pravda reports. However, the fund is currently blocked: Hungary is withholding payments amounting to €6.6 billion.

The total of the claims rose, the report says, because member states have declared additional deliveries from stocks and arsenals. Even if the €6.6 billion were released, the EPF would still not cover the full €43 billion, because a reimbursement rate is applied to the amounts to be repaid.

Ukrainska Pravda also reports that the Hungarian government under Viktor Orbán has filed a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the European Union. The case concerns the use of proceeds from frozen Russian assets to top up the fund.
