The European Commission plans to invite representatives of the radical Taliban regime to Brussels for discussions. These meetings are deemed politically sensitive and will address the deportation of individuals lacking residency status in the European Union.

A spokesperson for the European Commission stated that the Directorate-General for Migration (DG HOME) is working with the Swedish Ministry of Justice on a technical session with the Taliban. This marks the first official acknowledgment from Brussels regarding Sweden's role in organizing a potential visit by the Taliban to the EU quarter.

At the end of April, media reported that the EU was preparing for a visit from Taliban representatives to discuss the repatriation of migrants to Afghanistan. EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, has also called for stricter rules on deportations, as the current increase in repatriations is insufficient for him.
