Israel’s Minister for National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has released a video showing detained activists from a Gaza flotilla and taunting them. Several EU member states are now demanding sanctions against the minister. According to Politico Europe, even the German government is reconsidering its previous opposition to punitive measures against Israeli officials.
Giorgia Meloni condemned the footage and demanded the release of Italian citizens. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Madrid would push for EU-wide sanctions. Czech Foreign Minister Martin Macinka, on the other hand, vowed to block any EU sanctions against Israeli ministers.
The deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Wadephul, condemned the video. Berlin is reconsidering its previous opposition to sanctions against Israeli officials. EU foreign ministers will discuss possible steps in the coming days.
