In Kropp, in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, a severe explosion occurred early this morning in a multi-family home. According to Spiegel, emergency services discovered a dead man in his ground-floor apartment around 6:45 a.m. The building houses mostly seniors, with 29 registered residents.
Several people suffered smoke inhalation. Firefighters rescued many residents from balconies using aerial ladders. Up to 200 emergency personnel and around 20 ambulances were deployed. The blast wave blew out windows and doors of the building and neighboring structures.
The apartment where the fire started cannot yet be entered due to risk of collapse. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has been called in to shore up the building. The cause of the explosion remains unclear. According to the incident commander, the building is uninhabitable for now.
