In the Saxon town of Aue-Bad Schlema, the town hall remains in CDU hands. Marcus Hoffmann won the second round with 5,007 votes against Stefan Hartung of the Free Saxons, who received 4,499 votes.

The Free Saxons have now announced they will challenge the election result. The small party, classified as right-wing extremist by the Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution, has filed an objection, according to its own statements. Candidate Hartung was a longtime functionary of the NPD and serves on the city council and district council.

Hoffmann, 41, currently works in the city’s building authority and will succeed Heinrich Kohl (CDU), who had been mayor since 1999 and is stepping down due to age.
