However, during patrols in the northern part of the roughly 120-hectare area, emergency crews discovered new hotspots and smoke plumes.
The incident command has since requested reinforcements from Neubrandenburg. Several water tanks are being set up, and water from Langhegener See will be used for firefighting. The affected area lies within the Müritz National Park and is contaminated with munitions, preventing firefighters from entering. Special firefighting techniques were therefore not used.
On Wednesday, munitions had already exploded, complicating firefighting efforts. According to the fire department, several possible causes are being considered: old munitions could have exploded due to heat and ignited the fire. District Administrator Thomas Müller (CDU) told NDR that the site also contains tank demolition shells. Police say there is no acute danger to residents.
