A funeral prayer for Ali Khamenei, killed in the war, was held in Tehran. Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, 97, led the ceremony on the second day of public mourning. Khamenei died on February 28 in an Israeli airstrike on his official residence in the Iranian capital. Following the attack, the US and Israel waged more than five weeks of war against Iran until a ceasefire was reached in early April.
According to the Tehran Metro operating company, more than seven million trips have been recorded since the mourning began. It remains unclear whether this figure includes return journeys. Khamenei's body will lie in state in Tehran until Monday, after which ceremonies will continue in the pilgrimage city of Qom and neighboring Iraq. The burial is scheduled for Thursday in his hometown of Mashhad. Iranian media speculate whether Khamenei's son and designated successor, Mojtaba, will appear publicly at the funeral events for the first time.
