The German government has dismissed Vladimir Putin's suggestion to appoint Schröder as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict as a mere façade. According to Deutschlandfunk, a spokesperson described the idea as not serious. This came in the context of Putin's recent statements, which were intended to signal a supposed willingness to negotiate.
Kaja Kallas also sharply criticized the proposal, calling it "very cynical." She emphasized that Ukraine should not be pressured into making concessions. Kallas instead called for clear support for Ukraine and a rejection of any proposals that could legitimize Russia's aggression.
The backdrop to this discussion is the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, which has persisted since February 2022. The international community has repeatedly stressed that Russia is responsible for the war and that negotiations can only take place under conditions that respect Ukraine's sovereignty.
The German government has previously emphasized its commitment to continue supporting Ukraine, both militarily and economically. The rejection of the proposal demonstrates that Germany and its partners in the EU are firmly determined to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
