The Bundestag passed the national implementation law for the European Union’s (EU) AI regulation on Thursday. The Federal Network Agency will serve as Germany’s central market surveillance authority for artificial intelligence. Business associations welcomed the decision, saying it should increase legal certainty for companies.
The coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD voted for the bill, while the AfD, the Greens, and the Left voted against. Lawmakers also adopted a resolution aimed at creating an innovation-friendly framework for AI applications. Opposition motions to ban remote biometric identification failed to secure a majority.
The Federal Network Agency will take over market supervision unless specialized authorities are responsible. A coordination and competence center is also to be established to pool national expertise and serve as a contact point for European institutions.
