Germany sets new heat record – 41.5 degrees measured

Germany broke its nationwide heat record for the second consecutive day on Saturday. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported 41.5 degrees Celsius in Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt.

The previous record of 41.3 degrees, measured on Friday in Saarbrücken, was thus surpassed. The DWD had issued a red warning for large parts of the country on Saturday and did not rule out temperatures rising to up to 42 degrees. The readings are preliminary and may still be corrected.

Representatives of the steel, chemical, and automotive industries on Saturday blamed Deutsche Bahn (DB) for billions in losses. According to a report in “Welt am Sonntag,” dilapidated rail infrastructure has forced companies for years to shift freight to roads – even though rail transport is far more efficient. The steel industry, which transports nearly half of its products and raw materials by rail, is particularly affected. A spokesperson for Salzgitter said the company had to cut steel production. At ArcelorMittal in Eisenhüttenstadt, ore reserves were “critically low.”

The DWD expects cooling only from Monday, with thunderstorms moving in from the west. Heavy rain, squalls, and hail are possible.
