The announcement followed a Russian attack on Kyiv that damaged the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio. The Lavra is one of Ukraine’s holiest religious sites and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Parts of the historic film archive were also destroyed.

Greek Ambassador to Panagiotis Dimitrakopoulos delivered a letter from Greece’s Culture Minister Lina Mendoni to Tetyana Berezhna. Mendoni condemned the attacks on cultural heritage and announced concrete aid measures. The Greek Embassy in Ukraine stated on social media: ‘Protecting cultural heritage means preserving memory, identity, and the values that unite us.’

The four initiatives include funding restoration studies for the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a memorandum of intent between the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and Ukraine’s Culture Ministry, specialized training workshops for Ukrainian conservators in Thessaloniki, and a Greek contribution to the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Fund. Athens emphasized that protecting cultural heritage means defending shared memory and identity.
