Heidebad Halle: No Entry Without German Language Skills

An outdoor swimming pool in Halle (Saxony-Anhalt) will now require sufficient German language skills for entry. According to the managing director, the measure aims to ensure safety and relieve lifeguards.

Managing director Mathias Nobel justifies the controversial rule with safety: guests must understand the pool rules and be able to follow instructions from lifeguards. “We need to be sure that visitors understand our pool rules,” Nobel told the German Press Agency. If there are comprehension problems at the entrance, decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

The trigger was an incident last weekend: Nobel, himself a lifeguard, rescued a toddler from water that was far too deep. “Our lake is up to 13 meters deep in places. That’s simply dangerous,” Nobel said. Since the rule was introduced a few days ago, a few people have been turned away.

Nobel emphasizes that the rule also serves to relieve his lifeguards. In the past, there had been discussions because they were not willing to dictate the swimming rules into a translation program one by one. “My staff are already at their limit,” said the managing director. The decision has met with criticism, but Nobel remains firm: “We are staying consistent on this.”
