The foundation for the promotion was laid by the Berlin side in the first leg of the relegation playoff. In front of around 5,000 spectators at the sold-out Amateurstadion, Hertha got off to a lightning start, just as in the first leg. After only ten seconds, striker Elfie Wellhausen lobbed the Saarbrücken goalkeeper. However, the visitors from Saarland, accompanied by 1,000 fans, equalized eleven minutes later through Yara Volpert. The guests looked more dangerous than in the first leg and created several chances to add more tension to the tie.
But eight minutes before the end of regular time, Wellhausen’s second goal all but decided the tie, even though Saarbrücken never gave up and turned the game around in stoppage time through Kristin Hauck (90+1) and Lena Ripperger (90+5).
