The German national ice hockey team faces a crucial match at the World Championship in Switzerland. After a narrow 1:3 defeat against Finland, the team must win against Latvia on Sunday at 20:20 to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive. Captain Moritz Seider of the Detroit Red Wings, goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer (Seattle Kraken), and Lukas Reichel (Boston Bruins) are expected to play key roles.
Head coach Harold Kreis emphasized the importance of the game: “Every game is a knockout match.” Seider praised Grubauer for his strong performance against Finland: “He played fantastically and kept us in the game for a long time.” Grubauer prevented a heavier defeat with numerous spectacular saves and was a decisive factor for the team.
The German team needs to improve against Latvia to avenge their Olympic loss. In the first game, their power play was too weak, and Reichel, who joined the team only on Thursday, was not used. Kreis stated: “He will most likely be involved against Latvia.”
Group A is dominated by Switzerland, the USA, and Finland, while Germany and Latvia are fighting for the remaining quarterfinal spot. A win against Latvia is essential for achieving this goal.
