French Emmanuel Macron announced on the sidelines of the G7 summit that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle could be deployed in the Strait of Hormuz within two to three days – provided the agreement between the US and Iran is confirmed. Paris is also ready to send fighter jets, a frigate, and minesweepers for surveillance, Macron said, according to Handelsblatt.
According to media reports, Iran could demand fees for passage through the strait after a 60-day transition period. The Tasnim news agency reported such plans, citing Iranian sources. There was no independent confirmation initially. If such fees were imposed, they would violate international maritime law.
The German government insists on an international mandate and approval from the Bundestag before the Bundeswehr can be deployed in the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy government spokesman Sebastian Hille emphasized the general willingness to secure shipping traffic as part of a peaceful solution but did not specify a timeline for a mandate. A Defense Ministry spokesman noted that two mine-hunting boats are already stationed in the eastern Mediterranean and are prepared for any developments.
