Joachim Gauck has called on Germany’s black-red coalition government to pursue more decisive reforms, even if they prove uncomfortable for the public. “Every genuine reform comes with burdens. We need political leadership that has the strength to explain to the public why we must accept these burdens,” Gauck told Welt am Sonntag.
The lack of risk-taking among political leaders is also why more and more people are turning to the AfD, he said. “The absence of strong leadership, especially in times of widespread uncertainty,” is a reason for “the shift of many voters away from the parties of the democratic center,” Gauck argued.
“Many government representatives have adopted a habit of waiting and administering because they did not want to stand out through risk-taking,” Gauck criticized.
