Jürgen Klopp confirmed talks with the German Football Association (DFB) in an interview with MagentaTV and hinted that a deal is not a foregone conclusion.

Klopp is considered one of the most influential coaches of his generation. He turned Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC into top teams, winning two German league titles with Dortmund and the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool. However, Klopp remains under contract as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull GmbH until the end of 2029. According to Bild newspaper, his contract contains no release clause, meaning the DFB would likely have to pay a transfer fee in the low single-digit millions to secure his services.

Julian Nagelsmann had asked to be relieved of his duties after Germany’s disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The DFB granted his request after Germany lost on penalties to Paraguay in the round of 16, once again failing to advance beyond the first knockout stage. His contract had originally been set to run until Euro 2028.
