The Justice Ministers’ Conference (Jumiko) wants to amend the Self-Determination Law, which came into force in November 2024. According to Deutschlandfunk, specific cases of abuse have triggered this move. The exact amendment proposals have not yet been finalized but are to be discussed at the next Jumiko meeting in autumn 2025.

The law allows individuals to change their gender entry and first name by simply declaring it at the registry office. Critics had already warned of potential abuse before the law took effect. The Justice Ministers’ Conference is now responding to the cases that have occurred.
