Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) has spoken in an interview with Politico Europe about restructuring a family benefit. Facing budget savings requirements, she explained how the popular benefit should be changed and what that means for fathers and the “Elterngeld Plus” model. The conversation was conducted by Politico Executive Editor Gordon Repinski as a walk through Berlin’s government district.
Regarding the implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive, Prien advocated for a pragmatic, low-bureaucracy path for companies. The goal of income equality must not be lost sight of, the minister said. She also offered insights into how she wants to bridge divides within the coalition.
Prien shared her personal view on the dynamics within the coalition and the permanent election campaign mode in Germany. She emphasized the need for a new narrative for the country’s future. The interview is part of Politico Europe’s Berlin Playbook podcast, which is published every morning from 5 a.m.
