The lightning struck overnight on a sports field in the Niederbühl district, where participants of the handball festival were camping. According to police, the strike occurred around 11 p.m. Six of the nine injured were taken to hospitals, including a 13-year-old. One person suffered serious injuries but is not in life-threatening danger, police told Spiegel.
Police could not say whether the campers were already asleep or trying to secure their tents against the weather. The two-day handball festival’s website had announced 120 registered teams. The event combines sports, music, and partying, according to the announcement.
During the storm, another lightning strike hit Münsingen in the Reutlingen district, slightly injuring a woman on a sports field. Emergency services took her to a hospital.
