Christophe Leribault, who has been director of the Louvre for about four months, has pointed out the urgent need for investment before a commission of the French Senate. He described the museum as “at the end of its strength” and stressed that numerous technical systems and infrastructures are outdated.
“Despite the daily commitment of the staff, the Louvre is out of breath,” Leribault said. Extensive renovation and modernization measures are necessary to secure the museum’s operations in the long term. The institution faces a veritable investment wall.
In addition to technical challenges, strikes and security problems are also weighing on the museum’s work. Last October, jewels worth around 88 million euros were stolen from the Louvre, further exacerbating the security situation.
With around nine million visitors annually, the Louvre is one of the world’s most important cultural institutions. Leribault’s warnings underscore the urgency of taking the necessary steps to secure the museum.
