The SPD party congress in Wismar elected Manuela Schwesig as its top candidate for the state election on September 20 with 98.9 percent of the votes. Out of 91 valid votes, she received 90, securing a dream result.
In her speech, Schwesig emphasized that the upcoming election represents a ‘decision on the direction’ for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. She wants to become minister-president again and lead a stable government.
Schwesig, who has been in office since June 2017, currently leads a coalition with the Left Party. In a recent poll, the SPD stood at 27 percent, while the AfD was at 36 percent. The party congress is seen as the starting signal for the SPD’s election campaign.
