The number of marriages in Germany hit a new low in 2025. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 348,813 couples tied the knot — 403 fewer than in 2024. Since 1950, the figure has more than halved: back then, there were 750,452 weddings; in 2000, there were still 418,550.

The number of divorces, however, rose slightly: 130,053 marriages were dissolved in 2025, 716 more than the previous year. The lowest figure was recorded in 2023, with 129,008 divorces. On average, divorced couples had been married for 14 years and seven months. For around 20,800 couples, the divorce occurred in the year of their silver wedding anniversary or later — a share of 16 to 18 percent, which has remained stable since the mid-2010s.

In 2025, around 113,400 minor children were affected by divorces. Every second divorce involved minor children. The trend shows that the share of divorces with one child is declining, while the share with two or more children is increasing.
