Loud explosions echoed through the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight. At least eleven people were injured and one person was killed, according to local authorities. Multi-story buildings, including a hotel, caught fire, and several residential houses were completely destroyed, reported The Kyiv Independent. The attackers used dozens of missiles and cruise missiles, the news outlet said. Frightened residents sought shelter in metro stations, many setting up tents to spend the night underground protected from the air strikes.

Air raid alerts and explosions were also reported in other Ukrainian cities, including Zaporizhzhia and Pavlohrad in the southeast, as well as Sumy and Kharkiv in the northeast. Information on possible damage and casualties is not yet available.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier warned of a nighttime attack. He cut short his stay in Dublin, the Irish capital, where he had been visiting for the start of Ireland’s six-month presidency of the EU Council.
