Russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine overnight on July 6, targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region. At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.

At least 15 people were killed in Kyiv and around 60 wounded, including seven children, four rescuers and a police officer, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS). Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 27 of the injured are being treated in hospitals. In the Kyiv region, the death toll rose to eight, with 48 wounded, 20 of them hospitalized. The numbers could rise further as search and rescue operations continue.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia used a total of 419 attack assets: 68 missiles and 351 drones. Of those, 363 targets were intercepted — 326 drones and 37 cruise missiles. None of the ballistic and anti-ship missiles (type 3M22 Oniks/Zircon from the Kursk region) could be shot down. President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed a shortage of interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems. Air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat confirmed: “To shoot down ballistic missiles, you need something to shoot them with. The systems are sufficient. But we need a constant supply of missiles. We have a serious deficit of interceptors.”

Strikes and debris hit 34 locations, with debris found at 16 more. The Darnytsia and Podil districts were particularly hard hit, where Russian missiles struck residential high-rises. In Podil, a nine-story building was destroyed from the fifth to the ninth floor. Rescuers brought 17 people to safety and evacuated 28 more using aerial ladders. Recovery work is also ongoing at a 21-story building. In the Kyiv region, the situation is worst in Vyshneve: 479 residents were evacuated, and police have cordoned off the area. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Ukraine has requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council. Every missile fired against Ukraine, he said, is a signal not only for the country but for the whole world — Russia is trying to prove that violence can replace international law.
