The former Bundesliga player for RB Leipzig and Hertha BSC scored in the 23rd and 36th minutes, paving the way for Brazil’s comfortable victory. Cunha benefited from a poor clearance by Haitian defender Hannes Delcroix for the opening goal, while the second was a clinical finish into the left corner.

After the final whistle, the Manchester United striker was visibly relieved. “Scoring goals at a World Cup and helping my team – that’s everything I ever dreamed of,” he said. Until this match, Cunha had scored only once in 24 appearances for Brazil – in a World Cup qualifier against Argentina in March 2025.

Cunha had long been labeled a talent without consistency. His club career was erratic, with stints at RB Leipzig, Hertha BSC, Atletico Madrid, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Only his move to Manchester United last year turned things around: with ten goals and four assists, he helped the club secure third place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification.

Brazil’s coach Carlo Ancelotti announced that Cunha would start as the central striker in the third group match against Scotland on Thursday (midnight CEST). Fans already cheered him loudly when he was substituted after 64 minutes.
