The 29-year-old midfielder for FSV Mainz 05 was substituted in Toronto with the score at 0-1 after an hour.

Eight minutes later, Amiri delivered a precise cross to Deniz Undav, who equalized and later scored the winning goal in stoppage time. “It’s like a dream, simply unbelievable,” Amiri said after the match. The game was particularly emotional for him because his mother lives in Toronto: “I had to organize 25 tickets. To make my World Cup debut here with an assist for the equalizer and to turn the game around is really perfect.”

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Amiri’s attitude: “Nadiem is not someone who needs time to get to an emotional level; he’s immediately there. The cross was outstanding.” Amiri himself thanked the fans: “The whole stadium was basically Germany. It felt like a home game.”
