The joint Russian-Belarusian nuclear weapons exercises began on May 18. Belarus’s Defense Ministry announced large-scale maneuvers for combat use of nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence. Rutte stressed that NATO is closely monitoring the exercises.

Ukraine condemned the exercises as a dangerous precedent and a challenge to global security. Belarusian opposition leader in exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said that self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko has turned Belarus into a platform for the Russian threat through nuclear cooperation with Moscow.
