The NATO is following a secret Russian project called ‘Skythen’ with growing concern. According to investigations by WDR and NDR, Russian military planners are preparing to station nuclear missiles on the seabed. The authors Florian Flade and Antonius Kempmann uncovered the information.

The project envisions placing nuclear-armed missiles in underwater stations. From there, they could be launched almost undetected. The NATO considers the development a serious threat to maritime security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is pushing the plan forward, which is intended to massively expand Russia’s military strike capability underwater. Details on locations or timelines are not known. The alliance has stepped up its surveillance activities in the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea.

EuroPulse reported on May 20, 2026, about Putin’s visit to Beijing, during which China showed no interest in a Russian victory in the Ukraine war (Putin in Peking: China zeigt kein Interesse an russischem Sieg).
