Karol Nawrocki and Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke on July 8 at the NATO summit in Ankara. The Polish president said at a press conference that historical issues were not resolved in the conversation. Nawrocki also stressed that both countries are united on security matters: “We look in the same direction when it comes to threats to our independence.” The greatest common threat remains Russia.

Nawrocki also commented on the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). For him, “similar symbols are non-negotiable.” The emotions of Poles regarding the crimes of the Volhynia tragedy are not up for discussion. At the same time, he warned that the UPA flag limits Ukraine’s future in the European Union. Nevertheless, Nawrocki described the meeting as “constructive, as always.” They discussed how future cooperation should look.

Zelenskyy had previously called the meeting “important and necessary” and reported that the conversation lasted over an hour. Nawrocki acknowledged that Polish-Ukrainian relations had recently been marked by “great tension.”
