The parliamentary oversight authority has launched a formal investigation against Nigel Farage. The leader of Reform UK received the gift from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne shortly before announcing his candidacy for the 2024 parliamentary election. Farage claims the funds were intended for his personal security costs and therefore did not need to be declared.
Daniel Greenbergh, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, has initiated the investigation under Rule 5 of the code of conduct. This rule requires MPs to register all financial interests and registrable benefits received in the year prior to their election. Farage could face suspension from Parliament for a serious breach of the declaration rules.
A suspension of ten days or more could trigger a recall petition, forcing him to fight for his seat in Clacton again. The timeline for the investigations is not set, as the complexity of individual cases varies.
