No ICE Connection for Munich Airport in Sight

Deutsche Bahn sees no possibility of connecting Munich Airport to the ICE network. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the project fails due to technical hurdles and lack of capacity on the existing S-Bahn line.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) currently considers a long-distance rail link to Munich Airport unfeasible. As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, the responsible DB subsidiary would like to integrate the airport into the ICE network but points to significant technical hurdles.

Specifically, an extension of ICE line 60 is being discussed, which runs from Karlsruhe via Stuttgart and Augsburg to Munich. After a direction change at the main station, trains would have to be routed via the southern ring and the east station to the underground airport station. The “ICE 3neo” is being considered as rolling stock, with its 200-meter length precisely matching platform capacities.

The biggest obstacles are special approvals for the tunnel sections in Unterföhring and Ismaning, as well as the high frequency of S-Bahn line S8. The route is already considered prone to disruptions and offers few additional time slots for long-distance traffic. DB dismisses reports of a possible start date in July 2026 as rumors.
