Paraguay have qualified for the knockout round of a football World Cup for the first time since 2010. As one of the eight best third-placed teams, they will face Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany side on Monday (10:30 p.m. CEST, ZDF and Magenta TV) in Boston. It is the first meeting between the two teams at a World Cup since the 2002 round of 16, which Germany won 1-0.
Captain Gustavo Gómez struck a combative tone ahead of the match. ‘We have returned to compete, and we will fight until the end. We have put Paraguay on the world stage!’ the 33-year-old defender wrote on Instagram. ‘It’s not over yet.’ In his post, Gómez highlighted the difficulties overcome in recent years and called for unity: ‘TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER!’
