Rafał Leskiewicz, spokesman for the Polish president, said in an interview with Polsat News that the order had arrived at the chancellery. It will be kept “with dignity and respect” in the Office of Orders and Appointments. The certificate loses its validity, and the order will not be awarded to anyone else.
Background to the decision: Nawrocki revoked the award from Selenskyy because a Ukrainian military unit was named after heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The UPA fought against both the Soviet Union and the Polish underground army during World War II and is associated in Poland with the Volhynia massacre.
Leskiewicz stressed that the decision is not directed against the Ukrainian people. “Russia is the enemy of Ukraine, of all free Europe and the free world,” he said. Several Ukrainian politicians announced they would return their Polish orders.
