Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told journalists on Friday that the coming months could be “truly critical,” also due to the changing nature of the war. The concerns are particularly palpable in the Baltic states. Tusk was responding to media reports that Moscow is planning an armed provocation in Poland to test NATO’s resolve.
Polish outlet Onet reported, citing sources close to Karol Nawrocki, that the US had repeatedly warned Warsaw of an attack plan. The White House and the US State Department did not respond to BBC requests for comment. According to the reports, Polish infrastructure targets could be hit with missiles or drones, or soldiers could be deployed into the NATO country.
Tusk stressed: “Let us not be afraid; we are preparing for various situations, but we cannot ignore them.” Poland is aware of the threats, also thanks to information from allies. President Nawrocki will attend a NATO summit in Turkey next week, which is expected to focus on higher defense spending and further arms deliveries to Ukraine.
