Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the Polish presidential chancellery, said on the television station wPolsce24 that the strategic mistake lies with the Ukrainian side. Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had called the revocation a strategic error that only benefits Moscow. Bogucki countered: “From the Polish perspective, there is no strategic mistake. This mistake was made by the Ukrainian side when President Zelensky decided to name an important Ukrainian unit after the criminals of the UPA.”
Bogucki emphasized that Nawrocki initially raised the possibility of reversing the decision, then convened a chapter and held diplomatic talks. The Ukrainian side let the deadline for reversing the decision pass. Nawrocki then acted “cautiously and calmly.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk regretted the escalation, saying it only benefits Putin and shocks the allies.
Several senior Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Sybiha, announced they would return their Polish state awards. The Ukrainian side initially did not comment on whether the scandal would affect Zelensky’s trip to the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk.
