The incident took place in the western Polish city of Poznań. The 60-year-old witnessed three men harassing a Ukrainian boy on a tram. When he stepped in, the attackers turned their aggression on the Pole and later assaulted him at the tram stop.
Poznań provincial police spokesman Andrzej Borowiak said the victim suffered memory lapses. Police have secured witness statements and video footage from the stop. Footage from the tram is expected to be released on Monday. The search for the suspects is ongoing.
Hate crimes against Ukrainians in Poland have increased by more than 30 percent in the last six months compared to the same period the previous year.
