According to the Kyiv Post, the attack began around 11:30 a.m. local time. The Ukrainian Air Force warned of several missiles launched from the north. Estimates suggest about a dozen missiles were fired, including ballistic missiles and 3M22 Zirkon cruise missiles launched from Russia’s Kursk region.
Local monitoring channels identified the projectiles as possible S-300, S-400, or Iskander systems. Smoke rose over the capital as air defenses engaged the incoming missiles. Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage.
Daytime attacks are rare in Russia’s war against Ukraine—most air strikes occur at night. July, however, has seen an unusually high number of ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine: in the first 19 days, 107 ballistic missiles and 20 Zirkon missiles were fired. The military portal Militarnyi noted that this number exceeds Russia’s known monthly production capacity.
